Egypt terminated the safeguard investigation on rebar imports
Egyptian Chamber of Metallurgical Industries had lodged an application on behalf of some producers of steel reinforcing bars, alleging that the substantial increase in imports of steel reinforcing bars threatened to cause serious injury to the domestic industry, back in September 2012.
The following companies were represented by the Chamber of Metallurgical Industries:
- Suez Iron Industries Co.
- Sarhan Steel Company
- Egyptian Company for Steel
- Suez Steel Company
- Misr National Steel “Ataqa”
- National Port Said Steel Company (NPSS)
- Egyptian Iron and Steel Company
- Al Marakby Iron Company
- Medisteel Company for Steel Works
- Estar Egypt for Industries-6th of October
- Al Watania Steel Company
- Egyptian Americal Steel Rolling Co.
Following the application, the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Egypt imposed provisional safeguard measure on the imports of steel reinforcing bars in the form additional duty of 6.8 per cent on the CIF value but not less than 299 L.E./ton for rebars classified under HS tariff item numbers 72.13 and 72.14, in November 2012. Such provisional safeguard measure expired on 19th of June, 2013.
After examining the responses to the questionnaires submitted, and the comments of all parties involved through the hearing as well as the information submitted by the domestic industry, the Investigation Authority concluded that the increase in exports did not lead to the threat of serious injury. Thus, the safeguard investigation is terminated and the notice of termination is published on the Official Gazette on 21st of November, 2013.
