Omar Shah

Omar Shah began his career as a trader for Marc Rich in the 1980s, based in Westminster, London, where he purchased and sold metal from existing yards based on deep sea berths. In the late 1980s, Omar developed Marc Rich’s own export facility, based in Amsterdam, where in 1991 over 1.5 million tonnes was exported by a single berth. Omar later joined Newco Ferrous Trading (NFT) as a trader, and when, in 1998, EMR acquired a 50% stake of NFT, and the remaining 50% in the early stages of this century, Omar became a valued member of EMR.

Omar Shah was a cornerstone of EMR’s history and success, having been a vital part of the company since its earliest days. His career in the metal recycling industry spanned over four decades, and he worked closely with EMR’s founder, Phillip Sheppard, throughout the 1980s. His dedication, expertise, and passion for the industry were instrumental in shaping the company into what it is today.

Omar Shah’s commitment to EMR and the metal recycling industry was unparalleled. He played a central role in the company’s growth and success, often at the forefront of trades across the world. He was also part of EMR’s senior leadership team.

Omar Shah actively participated in IREPAS meetings for almost two decades representing EMR. He was a consistent member of the IREPAS Raw Material Suppliers Committee. IREPAS expresses deep regret and sorrow at the passing of Omar Shah, in August 2024, aged 65.

Chris Sheppard, chief executive of EMR, said: “Omar was a name our family grew up with. As children, before the days of mobile phones, we would often answer calls in the evening from him. To us at the time, a mysterious, charismatic, fast-talking, articulate gentleman.

“Omar was not only a remarkable professional, but also a friend to many in the industry. His loss will be felt by all who have had the privilege of knowing him.”

Beyond his professional achievements, Omar was known for his kindness, warmth, and genuine concern for others. He formed lasting friendships within EMR and throughout the industry, leaving a mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His loss is deeply felt by everyone who crossed his path, both personally and professionally.

David Sheppard, commercial director at EMR, said: “As we mourn Omar’s passing, we also celebrate the life of a remarkable man who gave so much to his work, his colleagues, and his loved ones.

“Omar will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the continued success of the company he helped to build.”
